Yes, for those who can't afford the professional bleaching, white strips may be an attractive alternative. They do actually whiten the teeth, and, unlike other over-the-counter whiteners, they do not harm the teeth.

However, many patients have been disappointed with their results, and researchs confirm that it is weak (5.3% hydrogen peroxide) and difficult to keep in place. Crest White strips are only a temporary tooth whitening, and not the deep, permanent bleaching that is done in a dentist's office.

Yes to various degrees. One person can have great results with them, and another person can use the same product the same way and have little or no results. The same can be found with professional bleaching though, so OTC products are the least expensive way to start. White strips usually work better then the OTC products that come with a tray.
