It was a joke and everyone is flying off the handle.

I am sure Christians who shove their faith down people's throats have problems too but not those who seek permission and lovingly share what they are convinced of.

This question is not acceptable. Atheists do not think they are smarter or wiser than everyone (or anyone). I am NOT an atheist!

Hmm. I don't see why people would be angry, and I don't see what would make this a joke. I'm an atheist, and because I HAVE thought quite a bit more than most people about the whole religion/spirituality/god thing, I do find relationships difficult. And yes, I can only conclude that the difficulty does come from the fact that I'm smarter/wiser than the vast majority of the people who I meet.

If I were 7 feet tall, I'd say I was taller than most people. If I could run a 4-minute mile I'd say I was faster than most people. If I could speak 8 languages I'd say that I could speak more languages than most people. In any of those cases, it'd be ridiculous to dispute my claim. Now, I claim that I'm smarter than most people, and wiser as well. Not smarter and wiser than everyone - I know people both smarter and wiser than I am - but more so than most people. I've got four college degrees, including two Masters degrees and a Ph.D., and I make a good living in academia. Here on Yahoo Answers I recently got a "best answer" from the asker of a question about the kinds of loads that private planes can handle, and on the same day, a "best answer" from the asker of a question - in French - about French peoples' attitudes (and yes, I wrote my response in French). I've also gotten "best answers" from Christians for my responses to their questions about religion, as well as from atheists for the same reasons. In short, you may dispute my claim to be smarter/wiser than most other people, but you'd be on shaky ground. I AM, and I've demonstrated it in a variety of areas.

Being smart and wise has advantages, but it also has disadvantages, and the difficulty with relationships is one of them. Part of being smart is taking responsibility in situations in which the less smart and less wise are simply incapable. On top of that, there's the need to cope with frustration - there will always be another person coming along asking "If evolution is true, why are there still monkeys?" or "The proof that god is real is right there in the Bible". It's like having a fast car - you still have to drive around on streets full of slow people, and complaining about it gets you nowhere.

Religious people think they are better than everyone else. They look down on everyone who doesn't believe in the same religion and sect as themselves. Religion is a terrible thing. Why not spend your time debating science or how to fix today's problems?

We have millions of problems in the world, and wasting time trying to prove the tooth fairy, God, santa and so forth exist isn't helping anyone.

Do you feel good spreading around your religion? You don't feel bad that instead of wasting money on the Church, you can feed a starving child?

Get over yourselves, you self-centered terrorists. Jesus was a human being, and so was Mohammad, Moses and so forth. Sheesh! STOP KILLING OVER IT.

I never implied I was smarter or wiser than anyone here. I have been married for 17 years and have close friends of all faiths for over 25 years. I would say no.

I don't have any problem with them at all. No myths, no mysteries. Whether they are smarter or wiser I can only venture a guess.

If your yardstick is academia or the sciences, then yes, they are "smarter." Does that translate into wisdom? Probably not to a believer who defines "wisdom" as a subset of religious ideology. And certainly intelligence itself is only a subset of wisdom.

Not at all. My boyfriend is an Athiest (I'm an Agnostic) and he's the sweetest, most loving guy I've ever been with. He dosn't think he's smarter or wiser than anyone, he just has his own ideas about the way the world is.

Does your question mean you're an atheist? Because it certainly isn't the kind of comment a Christian should be making.

In one question, You just did what you accuse atheists of doing! (think you're smarter/wiser than everyone.)

Atheists are not smarter or wiser than everyone else. We are only smarter and wiser than people who claim a book of mythology is a history or science book.
