Just like the big air parachute used to stop the space shuttle. If such a parachute is there then the pilots in emergency can just shut off his engine decrease his speed and hang out in the air and land slowly on the ground. Passenger seats can be designed with full body harness and shock absorbers. I think it will be expensive but it will save a lot of lives.

It would be too heavy, and take up too much space to be efficient and effective. That is a lot of weight in a huge passenger jet. Plus most accidents occur at take off and landing, and a parachute would do no good then.

Still that aircraft has to land somewhere and where it does it will hurt. I had a moment like that in my flight attendant training where I wondered, and a Pilot told me that the weight of that would be so much that less than half the seats would be filled,. because of weight and balance. The parachute would basically bring the plane down. There is also no where t store it, and all the time the cargo hold isnt heated, so the parachute would freeze and would not deploy when needed and anything in the airline industry has to be EXACT. A possibly working parachute wouldnt fly with the FAA, (pun intended?)

Hope that helps

Actually, one type does. There is a private jet that can be purchased that does have the large parachute...I believe that Angelina Jolie has one.
