You can't actually make Buttermilk from regular milk, however if a recipe calls for buttermilk and you don't have any on hand, you can add white vinegar to regular milk to use as a substitute. Suitable for a recipe, but not for drinking.

If you want to make your own butter and buttermilk at home this is how:
Get some heavy cream and put it into a food processor with the standard blades. Turn it on and run until the cream separates into the butter and whey. The whey is runny and the butter is creamy yellow. Once you have the butter, pace it in a cheese cloth-lined strainer over a bowl. Let stand for about 1/2 hour. This drains the rest of the whey from the butter.
Now you have fresh, delicious butter. The remaining whey drippings, and the stuff left over in the bowl of the processor make a delicious buttermilk. Some folks like to add just a bit of white vinegar to the buttermilk.
Enjoy

You can't, but if using a recipe needing buttermilk, you simply add 1 Tb vinegar into 1 cup of regular milk and let it sit about 5 minutes.
That's all there is to it! It works!

Buttermilk is the by-product of making butter. It's the liquid that's left over after making butter. The substitute everyone else is referring to is sour milk, which will work in a recipe but it's not quite the same.

I think you put in 1 T. of white vinegar per 8 oz of milk. The acid makes it thicken and taste more like buttermilk.

You can't... Buttermilk is partially churned milk ... it cannot be made from storebought milk... it has to be made and separated at the dairy.
You can puchase it at your local grocery store.
