An amp amplifies your power, a woofer is for bass sounds, a sub woofer is for really deep bass sounds, there are also mid range speakers(self explanatory) and tweeters that put out the higher sounds..if you don't know what you're doing then have a pro install it

The sound system has three basic components:

The audio source with an associated pre-amp - this is the radio/CD deck. The pre-amp is built in.

Next, the power amplifier. This takes the pre-amp output from the audio source and boosts it up for volume to drive the third major component: The speakers.

The speakers convert the electrical energy from the amplifier and convert it to sound. This is done by passing a current through a coil that is attached to a cone in the presence of a magnet, which moves the cone to push air. Speakers are designed to respond to particular frequencies: Sub-woofers are the lowest frequencies or bass of the system. Woofers are also bass. Mid-range is what it sounds like - the mid range of the audio, and the tweeters are for the high frequencies.

Balance controls the relative left/right volumes. Fade controls the front-back relative volumes. An equalizer can be used to control the relative volumes across the audio range - make bass louder, for example.
