I mean really, doesn't the word itself mean that you believe in an ideal world? No matter what the actual ideal you believe in, thats up to interpretation. However, I seem to hear it a lot. Just curious as to why the word itself can be used negatively. Opinions?

It isn't negative in and of itself. It can be a good thing up to a point to be an idealist. The negativity comes in because idealists often won't face reality. They become so focussed on their particular "ideal" that they lose touch with what is actually possible for them to achieve, and wind up cynical, because life won't line up with their desires.

A lot of times, idealists tend to not think realistically. It is definitely a good thing that they want to imagine the ideal situation, think positively, but unfortunately this isn't a perfect world. It's best to be prepared for all situations. Definitely try to have a positive outlook on life, but realize that things don't always work out "idealy".

People miss interpret the meaning of the word. Instead they confuse an idealist with some sort of structured order, religion or politics etc.

To me, an idealist sounds like a fool. They aren't seeing things as they really are. They're on the opposite end of the spectrum from pessimists. Any extreme is bad.

Hey, HANS...what the hell was your comment about. How arrogant. Were you suggesting I did not know how to work a computer because I wasn't an atheist. If that's not the most idiotic deduction, I don't know what is.
