Can we ever win?

If we leave then it's a hotbed for terrorists and anyone anti-america. A victory and training ground for them. They will look at us as a weak people and that we will give up and run away if things get too tough.

If we stay then the terrorists will fight over there instead of over here. If we can gain control then we have a possible ally in the Iraq government should they get their act together.

If Saddam hadn't played games then we would never have been put in this position. We all know the UN wouldn't do anything. We were attacked first. Going to Iraq made sense at the time. We'd probably be better off if not for some of the military errors.

I still support our president and our troops. I hope we can gain control and work with Iraq to help them rebuild. That the Iraqi people can have stability and the freedom that they want. That Iraq would be our ally in the MiddleEast which I'm sure is what the government really wants.

They will NEVER admit the cannot win regardless of how many people are killed.

Eventually things will seem better or we will be told things are better and our troops will be brought home. However, I dont think it will really ever be a peaceful place. As soon as outside troops are gone, things will go back to how they are and were. There will be some group, whether it be a past leadership or a new one waited for the right time, that will take over and oppress the people again. A fair, law abiding government CANNOT compete with a terrorist group that has no boundaries.

You say that were not winning in Iraq. maybe because all you know about over there is what you see and hear from TV.War isn't like a Video game. were doing more over there just just fighting battles. O yea i forgot the Media never shows all of the Humanitarian aid we give to these countries. that's right that stuff doesn't sell papers. All I know is myself and a lot of other soldiers are tired of hearing people say that we're gonna lose and they've never been there. they complain about the problems in this world but never do anything all they do is sit at home complaining about how the world is going down the drain and yet there the ones who never vote and are on federal assistance. And are under the belief that the Government owes them some thing which it doesn't Whiners need to wake up and use there freedoms to make a change in America and in this world instead of using there freedom of speech to whine like a child when they don't get there way.

The situation in Iraq i sfar more difficult than simply winning and lsoing. Withdrawing would not technically constitute as a loss because Hussein and his militaryw ere overthrown, which was one of the main goals, however lawlessness has ensued. The warlords and gangs, most fundamental islamists, are vying to turn iraq into an islamofascist stae based on the supreme ayatollah in IRan. If this were to happen that would be aloss for thw whole world because it would increase IRans influence in th region and undoubtably the NOC's control of oil supploes. A victroy is not defeating all the insurgents, but stablizing a democratic soceity and building up enough of a military in Iraq to let the federal government fend for itself. On that note the current prime minister of IRaq is doing a bang up joob given his situation. However America should not pack up and go home ebcause leaving would be dangerous to US national security and wolrd nationla security. It would ensure the spread of islamofascism and create a breeding ground for terrorism undoubtably supported by IRan. A situation similar to what happened in LEbanon following Damascus's decision to withdraw. Iraq needs to survive so the US can show that democracy will work in the middle east and that would be the dealiest blow to terrorism and tehran.

The military will not admit how deep the trouble they are in. That will slap the faces of the troops in Iraq and afaghan. That will demoralize the troops, that is a no no.

Bush, Rumsfield will never admit the trouble they have set us and our military men up.

I see one way out. That will be when new president comes up and cut it short. Like the Vietnam.

Or there is a huge increase in casualties and the critics forces the government to commit a resolution to end the occupation.

Remember Bush's support is down to 33%. Republican may soon move in and do something to silence critics.

You are learning impaired.

You are actually partly correct this time however, I will concede that. The question of "Win" is what I must agree with. I recently heard it said that...

"We will never win their (the Iraqi People) hearts and minds, we must win their Trust and Confidence."

We aren't the ones who need to win - the Iraqi people need to win. They need to win by stabilizing and supporting their newly formed government. The US Military knows this - apparently you don't.

It isn't about a body count, and at the 80 to 1 kill ratio (80 Iraqis for every 1 US death) with a total population of 26 Million people - 58,000 would equate to 4 million 640 thousand Iraqi deaths, nearly 20 percent of their population - not gonna happen.

I have only one request: Renounce your citizenship and move to Iraq. This is the 4th or 5th ignorant statement / question you have asked.

Captain, US Army

Excuse me could you paraphrase the quesion..Win What? I mean who exactly are they fighting?

Iraq posed absolutely no theat to us whatsoever and any other country. They were a soft touch, crippled economicaly by a decade of sanctions. Children were dying through lack of medicines.Food was in short supply.

Iraq needed help, aid, medicines, not war.

Sure Saddam was a dictator, but there are many dictators around the world, we don;t invade their country.

The invasion and excuse for war was basd on lies, doctored evidence. Not sanctioned by the UN. As a result our brave young men and women, and yes we do support you guys! have died and have been injured and maimed in their thousands...and for what? why? The contry is a mess on the brink of a civil war. At least 40 or 50 die each day.100,000 have innocent died.

The Iraq war was/is a massive crime against humanity. Bush and Blair have not apologised, admitted their mistake or apologised to the parents and families of the soldiers who have died neddlessly in this illegal unjust war.

Do either of them have a conscience? No. They are both warmongering cold blooded men who are driven by green and agression. They will go down in history as war criminals.

They are not trying to win anything... they are fending off the radicals until the newly elected government is strong enough to remain viable after the US leaves.

The Iraqi president already said he doesn't expect that the US will need to continue in their role of peacekeeper beyond next summer.

And at the rate deaths are mounting we would be in Iraq another 17 years to reach 58,000 fatalities.

Gee, sodomite, another less than educated question? Right now, this is a counter insurgency operation, as major military operations against an enemy army have really been over for years.

Because, you see, a US victory is not dependent upon eliminating every last Democrat-supported terrorist insurgent. Victory for us is when the Iraqi government is strong enough and secure enough and capable enough to continue the fight on its own, and asks us to step down.

That is our target for declaring success. Because the Iraqis are increasingly capable, that's why we are talking about downsizing our forces there in the near future.

The military well never admit it can not win in Iraq. The question is, under the rules of engagement, can the military win in Iraq?
