A skillet is a frying pan. It is a round pan that is about two inches tall with a rim around it. You use it on top of the stove. Shortening is the fat in the recipe. It could be butter, lard, margarine or a product like Crisco if you have that where you are. Usually when a recipe says shortening it means the Crisco. Crisco is a white, fat type product that comes in a can. Sometimes you can use half butter/margarine and half Crisco if you want. There is a website called nancyskitchen@yahoo.com. It is a free recipe exchange website and it has wonderful recipes. When you have any questions you can post them and the members will answer for you. You might really like it.

A skillet is kind of like a slang word for frying pan, depending on where you live. As for shortening? It's a fat. You can find shortening in tubs or containers; it's white, and has the consistancy kind of like soft butter. It's used a lot for baking, can be melted and used for pan-frying (like fried chicken?), and even for greasing surfaces to make, for example, a muffin tin, non-stick!

A skillet is a frying pan and shortening is fat (lard) that is used in baked goods, such as cookies. There is nothing wrong with shortening so dont think nasty. You dont taste it, so dont worry. Its a necessity to make certain baked goods!! Trust me, it would not be there if you didnt need it! Im sure you have had it and not even known about it!! :)

A skillet is like a frying pan...It's just the pan that you cook everything in. Shortening is animal fat (I know, it sounds gross). You can buy it at your everyday grocery store.
