Went camping and tripped over a rock, fell and dirt and muck got stuck deep under my thumbnail. I cut the nail down and got some out, but there is still some dirt stuck underneath. Do I need to make a doctor's appointment or is continual application of bactine/hydrogen peroxide, etc., good enough?

As long as the skin isn't broken--there isn't any blood under the nail, then you should be fine. As the nail grows, the dirt will work its way closer to the tip of your finger and will come out with hand washing.

go to the doctor. i done the same thing years ago when i was at school, my thumb turned various colours and hurt before i could squeeze my nail and puss would come out - gross! thats when i went to the doc and he injected under my thumb...this ultimately turned my thumb black but the infection cleared up thank god. don't wait for the puss to start coz the needle under the thumb bloody hurts - just see the doc asap!

Soak your hand in a bowl of warm water with dawn dish detergent in it for about 10 minutes. That should loosen it up enough to get it out.

Try to keep it as clean as possible but keep in mind it may never come completely clean if its under the skin

Try using an old tooth brush if a nail brush doesn't remove it.
