You really think you have herpes do you?
You get a red rash that won't go away. That's enough for doctors. They look at you and say "uh huh, think you've got herpes" They pause for you to say "OMG but I'm a virgin" after which they take a swab and tell you it is only a pimple.
There is no such thing as herpes. God doesn't make STD's because only married couples should have sex anyways.
PS apatheistic here, above was only a joke. I was serious about the first line though. Edit your post and tell us why you think you have herpes.

There are two basic tests for STD's that can be performed. One way is a blood test, this will check for antibodies present in the blood for a disease or markers to indicate the disease. It is the same as having blood drawn or donating. They will stick a needle in the arm (usually) and draw a couple of vials of blood to be tested. This can detect Herpes during a dormant period for an eruption, they can also check for other STD's such as HIV and others.
Secondly they can do a swap of the eurethra to check for things like gonorrhea, or chlamydia. While "down there" the doctor can also visually inspect the area for signs of things like HPV (genital warts) Herpes, or lesions which can denote other diseases in advanced stages. The tests results for both will be availble after a short time for processing. They are a bit painful but worth the piece of mind.
I recommend having the tests done as some people are asymtomatic for some diseases but can still carry, and pass them to partners. The risk of having multiple STD's is higher once exposed to one you may know of (sometimes they travel in pairs) The sooner you know about them the sooner they can be treated or cured. Some STD's are not curable like Herpes but they can be treated with acyclovir. Others like the clap you can get a shot of PCN for and it will be cured.
You should abstain from sex and you and any partners you have had since exposure should be tested. When properly used spermicidal lubricants, and Latex condoms (not natural animal membrane condoms) can help reduce the risk of transmission, but will not eliminate it. Lastly if you have small blisters in or around your mouth, anus, or genitals, or you feel an itching or burning in these areas it could be a symptom of Herpes. You can pass Herpes from mouth to genitals and vice versa so be careful and wash your hands with soap and water before and after using the bathroom. Switch towels for the affected area and the rest of your body. Get tested & good luck.

They can't really do a test for Herpes unless you have symptoms. Symptoms would be a sore kinda like a blister in the genital area. If you get one of those, you should have it checked. They will probably tell you that you need to wait about 3 months to see if any symptoms show up.
Nothing to be afraid of at the doctor... it's not an invasive test.

don't be afraid they do it all the time... and you feel som much better knowing, regardless of the answer...
herpes is a skin test... you need to have some sort of marking/sore whatever for them to remove some tissue from, which they send to the lab to test...
it's no where near as bad as not knowing...

Physical exam, blood drawn, urethra swab.
Can't detect Herpes or HPV unless there's an outbreak.

for herpes I think it may just be a blood test but Iam not sure but the other thing is they use a really small q tip and insert it into the head of your penis to swab for secrections and nasty stuff.

in the adventure that they stick that Q-tip on your penis it is like a 9 inspite of the undeniable fact that it is actual speedy. It sucks.
