Do we need to disinfect first? If so, how? This new dog will be up to date on all vaccinations, etc.!

CDV doesn’t last long outside the dog’s body; heat, sunlight, most detergents, soaps, and various chemicals inactivate it. After an infected dog has been removed from the premises, contaminated objects and living areas should be disinfected with a 1:30 bleach-water solution.
If a dog has died from CDV infection, pet owners should wait about one month before introducing a new puppy or dog into the home. Contaminated objects and living areas should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with a 1:30 bleach-water solution.

I had some puppies pass away from parvo. totally devastating! disinfect all areas the dog had been with a bleach/water mix. bleach is the only thing that can kill things like that! Parvo can stay in the dirt for several months! Not sure about distemper, but i know that both are so terrible, that i would wait as long as possible before getting another dog! I'm so sorry about your loss, and good luck in the future!

The virus is not especially stable in the environment, probably lasting no more than a few weeks. It is susceptible to disinfectants, especially the quaternary ammonium compounds such as Roccal (TM). I would buy all new things, Don't share food bowl etc it is spread by secreations. Canine distemper virus is most often transmitted through contact with respiratory secretions. Contact with the urine and fecal material of infected dogs can also result in infection.
Call your vet they could probably provide you with the best information and sell you a good disinfectant.
Good luck, and have fun with the new pup.

If distemper, is anything, like "Porbo", then you should definately ask your "Vet", or bleach, down, your sidewalks-porch, area's , with a bleach/water, solvent........I would be really careful about getting another dog, however, because, there very well could be area's you missed, and your "new dog" could very easily, get what the last dog, got......Its a "Heart-Breaking" thing, to experience, isn't it, I'm sorry, for your last, dogs, Passing......Good-Luck, with this, New-Dog........
