Check the New York Public Library eBook collection (you borrow a book in PDF format, and ten days later your copy dies and the library can re-lend it. Very clever.)

Of course you have to have a NYPL library card. Maybe your own public library has something similar, or maybe you have a friend who lives in NY.
If the book is a public-domain (out of copyright) classic, it might be available free on the Gutenberg project.

well if the book is a classic then you could go to CliffNotes.com, but for any other books you can just go to Google.com and type in the title of the book. (thats what i always do)
