Does anyone know what would cause mild bleeding between periods for a woman who has a copper IUD? I've had mine for a year now, with no problems.

My period ended on August 4, and was normal. Saturday (Aug. 12) night, I noticed blood on the toilet paper after wiping myself. Bright red, mucousy blood. No pain or any other discomfort...just this bright blood. I noticed it twice that evening, and that was it...nothing since.

I'm healthy, 30 yo female, not ill in any way, and no other medical problems so to speak. This is the first this has happened.

I've checked, and the string is still there. Before I waste my ob/gyn's time, does anyone know if this is common after having an IUD for a year?

I forgot...I know this is in the pregnancy category, but I posted this question in the Women's Health section Sat. night and had one response from someone who didn't speak English that well. Sorry if it's miscategorized!

you still ovulate with the coil ,it could be that, the problem with the coil is irregular bleeding for no reason at all, believe me if it had embedded as previous answerer says you would be bleeding heavily and be in pain.

It definitely needs to be attended by Gynaecologist. It may be nothing but can be anything.
1. Erosions due to IUD
2. Infection
3. More seriously (hope it is not) embedding of IUD in tissues causing bleeding

There are instances where IUD perforated the uterus and gained entry into the abdominal cavity perforating the intestines and causing other problems.

So, definitely seek a gynae opinion.

I do not mean to scare you, But you need to see the doc.

I am a doctor

You might have to have the IUD re-fitted as it may have moved inside you and caused bleeding. You are definitely due for a checkup with your ob/gyn after having the IUD for a year, so you will not be wasting her time.

A friend had the same situation 6 months after insertion. She went to the gynae who told her everything was fine and that it does happen on occassion to some women and not to worry unless it happens again. It is now 18 months later and nothing happened since.

I would suggest that if you feel uncomfortable about it and especially if it happens again, do go and have a check-up. Best to check out these things rather than discovering some months later that it is caused by something dangerous.

Good luck.

I had the copper IUD and I did not like it because I would get heavy bleeding. Also, I would spot in between. Now i am using the mirena, I don't get my periods anymore. I only spot in between.

You can sometimes have spotting with an IUD.

However, never consider that you're "wasting" your ob/gyn's time! Make an appointment.

Occasional bleeding is USUALLY nothing to be particularly concerned about. Many things can cause some spotting, most of them completely benign.

However, if this continues or gets worse, I'd urge you to see your GYN for further workups.
