I have a beautiful ,loving , playful, smart , kind , affectionate , funny, large male tabby . He is not fat , just large .( Big feet, long legs , I love them and kiss them all the time ) .My question is when I took him to the vet this year to get his annual checkup and booster shot , he is 1 1/2 years old, he weghs 16lbs. The vet said he could loose a bit of weight but he is a large cat. I only feed him the best quality food - now it is diet , but there is no change . Should I be worried ? He is very healthy no heatlth problems

i had the same silver/grey large tabby, he wasn't fat either just tall and long legged, but very big for his age. the vet told me the same, but he lived for 10 years and passed from a kidney problem that had nothing to do with his size( I Miss Him ). Just keep him happy and spoil him every once in a while and don't let him get lazy and he'll be fine. take care

Do you free feed or do you measure his food? Some times if cats are allowed to eat all they want, they eat too much. Look on the side of the bag and see how much they recommend feeding. Are you feeding more?
It is the rare cat that will walk on a leash. But many cats will jump after things on a string or chase a ping pong ball. Try and get tabs moving a bit and see if that doesn't get a few oz. off. At the very least you will enjoy your time together.

I have a silver haired tabby cat. He's only seven months old, but he already weighs as much as my two other cats, Abby and Dusty, who are mother and daughter. They both weigh around twelve-thirteen pounds, and Sheldon (silver haired tabby) weighs in at a whopping eleven pounds three ounces. I'm not too concerned about it, as he's still growing, and neither should you! both of my female cats went to the vet to get their deworming medication (they went crazy when we tried to give them the medication at home) and the veterinarian said they were at a healthy weight, but their size made them look fat, since both momma and daughter are the runt of their litter. If your cat is hugemongous, his weight (just like in a healthy human; screw BMI) matches his size. Don't worry about what the vet says, unless your cat's health is getting bad.

My kitty is 17lbs. He's around 5 years old and he's fine. Is your kitty "fixed"? Most cats gain alot of weight when you have that done. A vet told me to watch out about how much cats that big jump around though, because they can break legs when they get too heavy. At least he's not this big. Poor little kitty.

I am sure he is just fine. If he ever becomes listless, and has no energy then you should worry. It might not be bad to help him get a little extra exercise though. I have a very special cat too. They are amazing animals aren't they. Just like children. Give him a kiss for me.

I too have the same. He is 14 y.o.. He weighs 18 lbs.He did have what I call "an utter".Just check to seeif his stomach area is wider than he is.(look at him at the front of his head towards his back). Also feel to see if stomach feels like he "might be pregnant". it's good you feed him quality food.I feed mine 'hills science diet'. It is very palletable.I think he is just right for his breed. Our cat did weight over 20 lbs. (He looked like a racoon)
What brand(s) do you feed yours?

if a cat looses weight too fast it screws up it's liver, so just decrease the amount of regular food you feed him by 10% and watch the number of treats you give him and he'll be fine. if you are worried that you don't think that he needs to loose weight, then maybe get a second opinion.

As long as there are no health problems I wouldn't worry about it. I have one too about the same size! Just make sure you get him plenty of excersise toys. I run around with toys all time and let him catch them. We go for walks with his leash on. I love fat cats and as long as there are no heart problems I wouldn't worry about it too much.
