Yeah I think it is when they dont properly clean the clams and they still have tiny bits of sand and dirt in it yum. That is why I dont eat it gross.

SAND.
The clams have it in their intestines. They need to cleaned in a strange way-by getting them irritated so that they sort of "sneeze" the sand out. That's done by sprinkling oatmeal in their water. However, not every clam will expel the sand, and that is what you are tasting. Unless it is pieces of shell, but you can tell those right away, they are much bigger.

If you yourself buy fresh live clams best way to "clean " the sand out of clams is to put them in some water with cornmeal. The clams eat dirt and stuff thats what in their belly so if you soak them in the cornmeal it replaces the sand . You also can just hang them in like onion bag for a bit, but cornmeal, is sooo much tastier.

lets see, they are bottom dwellers, so...sand...maybe pieces of shell, or possibly itty bitty pearls. (I have seen them!)
