OOOHHH! I love you! I work in a public library in the U.S. I spend most of my day telling people to take their phone calls to the lobby. Most people comply. Occasionally, I get someone who is highly insulted that I interrupted a rather loud phone conversation. I was intruding!
We have signs up asking people to turn off their phones completely or turn them on to vibrate. There are some posted on the computers! Then, these bozos sit by the computers and have a phone conversation!
You are right. Libraries used to be much quieter. But, with all the new equipment- phones, fax machines, computers and the like, it's getting harder and harder to find some peace and quiet in the library.

Yes, it is very annoying. That's the purpose of a library, to read in silence. But to me loud people are annoying in general, they don't have to be on a phone to get on my nerves, there are many others. They include the people in the restaurant that would like for everyone to hear their conversation. The person I am on the phone with that begins to shout to someone else in my ear, instead of just telling me to hold on. The mom in the grocery store or restaurant that is letting her child run around and then decides to scream at the child that is obviously paying her no attention, she then realizes he is not listening and instead of going over to him, she continues to scream from where she is. Then there is the ever popular person who must think everyone else is hearing impaired and talks loud for no other possible reason than this. So yes I find it very annoying.

Yes!!! I remember when I didn't have to listen to someone's mobile phone conversation in such places as the library, a restaraunt and even the bathroom. Some times I think we would be better off without those things. Nothing like trying to enjoy an evening out with your husband in a nice quiet restarant and to hear someone arguing loudly or just talking loud on their phone on the next table. And then to go to the bathroom and hear some female yakking on her phone while doing her business. Some people think way too much of them selves......

I miss the days of the quiet library....sigh....
One of these days book lovers are going to riot, I just know it. Inconsiderate people like that ought to be phsically removed from the vacinity until they can respect everyone else's peace.
Maybe you should gather up some others and start picketing around her with a signs saying "Shut Up or Get Out!". lol

The American population seems to have forgotten what it was like not to be connected at all times, and it's sad. It was only maybe 15 years ago that mobile phones were fairly rare, and now people of all ages behave as though they couldn't possibly get through a day without one. I think people look perfectly ridiculous walking around in stores, bathrooms, events, in their cars, and anywhere else with a phone in their ear, or now with the earpieces so they look like they're talking to themselves.

It happens here in America all the time. In the past five years I cannot remember a time people were not on their cell phones in the library.

Yes that is extremely annoying. I am an avid cell phone user put it is people like that that help me understand why they are becoming banned in so many places. They need to make the car one of those places unless you have an earpiece, i can't stand the people that can't drive and talk at the same time.

It's very annoying. Maybe you should tell her nicely to turn down or off her phone. I'm surprised why the library employees won't warn her though.

Well, silly adverts like that Irn Brew one doesn't help. You know the one where the trouble maker in the library actually slags off the little old lady librarian for shhusshing him...That's disgusting. Teenagers get the wrong message, they think it's ok to be such an inconsiderate little shi....t
