1. Call the bike shop he bought it from. On more expensive bikes there is a serial number that the bike shop records in these instances. If there is a serial number, this will help the cops id the bike if they find it.
2. Call the cops and file a complaint. Do not take matters into your own hands.
3. Check ebay, used sporting goods stores, and local pawn shops for the bike.
4. Buy a new bike if you cant find it

1) Probably, his bike is history.
2) YES. He should raise money for himself to get a new bike. He shouldn't have left it in the front yard if he really thought it was an expensive bike. Obviously, he didn't value it that much.
3) If he or you happen to see your friend's bike at "another" person's possession, I would suggest that you call the cops. You don't want the "criminal" to put charges against you/him, instead, when you/him "steal" it back, because if the bike hasn't been registered, then it's his word against yours. The cops will believe him instead, not you.
Good riding!

If it's expensive, it will probably show up on ebay. Keep your eye out for it.
Do not try and chase down a bad guy, even if you see him with the bike. Get the police, and file a police report anyways. There is a chance your friends parents home insurance may cover it, if it was a realllly expensive bike, like $5000 maybe.

go to the cops, fill out a detailed report. meanwhile, patrol the area with massive force. if you find it, 2 options- 1 call the cops (proper thing to do) or 2 vigilante justice (the fun way). whereas you guys are young teens id go to the cops. whoever stole that bike might want to keep it prettttty bad.

Have him report it to the police immediately. If his parents are homeowners and the house is insured, he may be able to recover some of the cost from the insurance company.
