I want to hang some pictures in frames and eventually some larger artwork. The problem is I have an aversion to making holes in the wall. How can I hang the pictures? Is there a special tape that can hold the weight and also not rip the paint off the wall or tear the wallpaper? Where would I get something like that?

Please don't answer with "I dunno" or "why do you ask?".

3M makes adhesive hooks, which work best on painted walls. Use goo-gone to remove them. The hooks list the appropriate weight it can hold.

Most rooms look more welcoming if they contain pictures. These need be expensive originals; reproduction prints and posters can be every bit as attractive and effective. But, whether a valuable family heirloom or a cheap and cheerful poster, a picture must be hung where it can be easily seen and enjoyed.

The mistake most often made is to hang pictures too high. As well as bring impossible to see without craning your neck, pictures hung too high can make the viewer feel a bit like a dwarf.

Not only should a picture be hung at the right level, it should also relate to other objects in the room. A picture hung on an otherwise empty wall often seems lost and unconnected, as if it arrived there by accident.

Instead, place a picture above a table, sofa, desk, sideboard, bookcase or fireplace, fact, any piece of furniture or architectural detail that will visually anchor it. Large painting or posters can command a blank wall, but again, few people have pictures big enough to stand on their own.

You can hang a picture centrally above a piece of furniture, or remember, if all the pictures in a room are hung in the same way. Each centered above a piece of furniture, for instance. The effect can be boring.

Try hanging one or two off-center. When it comes to grouping pictures, before banging holes in the wall, think about how they relate to one another. If the group has a strong subject theme, animals or children perhaps, a variety of media, shapes and frames can be mixed together very successfully.

Double sided tape only holds so good then when it gets moist from humidity inside the tape starts to get unstuck and will cause your pictures to fall and possibly break. If it's any help, holes in the wall from nails or thumbtacks are not too hard to get rid of, just fill in with a little white toothpaste or you can use plaster and touch up with the color paint in your room. This isn't going to be easy. Maybe if you did shelves with the pictures on them that would be less holes. Sorry I can't help too much. Try and ask a specialist at HomeDepot or a home improvement store near you.

Here is a tip I learned from watching HGTV's "Room by Room": make a template (pattern) of the pictures you want to hang. Use painter's tape (that blue tape) and tape the patterns to the wall and move them around until you are satisfied with the arrangement. If they are not too heavy you could use velcro on the backs (the sticky kind would be perfect). Just cut a piece of the hook & loop tape, peel off the back on one side, stick it to your picture, then stick the matching piece on it and stick up on the wall. Of course, 3m also makes hangers called "command strips" which press on to the wall and when you want them off the tape removes very easily following the directions. Really tho, if you use the template method above, you can hang your pictures with picture hangers with confidence and not have a bunch of holes in the wall. Good luck.

3M makes these cool little velcro snap together things that don't penetrate the wall. You can buy them at target or walmart in the home office section. You stick one to the wall and one to the back of your artwork and they snap together really tight. They stick to the wall with an adhesive (like putty) so when you take it down, you just pull a little tab at the bottom and the putty comes right off the wall with no damage. Make sure you follow the weight guides on the package though so they're sturdy enough to hold your art.

I've never found any type of tape that will hold much weight for a long period of time. Since frames have glass in them and you wish to eventually add larger artwork my suggestion is to simply accept the holes in the wall.

I would have a level/wall hanging kit from lowes that's about 50.00 for the hanging of things you will make sure it's a stud and not area that can't hold the heavy items, also if you are near wires it will help you too. Make sure you get things for hanging stuff. And have plastic insersts for things that are heavy. Have a electric screw driver. Nails are waht kills the wall.

The adhesive hooks do not hold anything of weight. I saw an infomercial for a super hook that you push in turn and hang your picture. They hung objects of various weights and when they removed the hook there was only a pin. Sorry I can't remember the name of the hook.
