As a cause of the war religion played a minor role. However, both sides were very religious. Stone Wall Jackson (One of the best Confederate Generals) was a minister, as were several of the Northern commanders. Robert Lee constantly was praying to God for help and guidance.

Both sides believed they were fighting for God and that he was on his side.

What part of no slavery as a cause for civil war don't you understand? Religion has nothing to do with it.

Yeah man, the southerners pointed to the Bible's condoning of slavery as justification for why it was OK (the descendants of Ham and all that).

Not really... though Joseph Smith did prophesy about it several decades before it happened. He even told which state it would start in (SC). But the anti-mormons don't want you to know about stuff like that... ;-)

It was economical. Without the slave labour the South was in trouble with maintaining their economy.
