People try drugs for various reasons - some because they want to fit in with their friends, some out of pure curiosity, and some because they are unhappy in their life and are looking for something to let them forget about their problems for a while.
For the first two reasons, it is usually easy to stop quickly and not become addicted. Unfortunately, for those who use drugs for emotional reasons, it is extremely hard to stop because the drugs are a release. Unless they learn how to deal with the underlying problem, the drug will always pose a threat to them.
Solutions? For the first two groups, there is no solution. People have a strong need to fit in and they will always be curious. For the people who use for emotional relief, the solution is to solve the underlying problem.

Many reasons and sometime no reason at all. Most of the time people become addicted to mask a pain or hurt...It depends on the willingness of the addict but intervention and rehabs seem to work on a willing participant... education has always seemed to be the best deterant.

People become addict, usually because they are trying to escape reality, and then it takes more and more drugs to escape as your body builds up a tolerance to the drug.
There are programs that can help, the person that's addicted has to hit rock bottom and want to change.
