It's the past participle form of "prove."

The only reason I can come up with is that Yahoo! is out to render us incapable of proper speech.

yozora - I know that Americans do in fact use that word, but Yahoo! doesn't recognize it.

It's in the dictionary so therefore it is a word. You can't argue with MR. WEBSTER!!!!

I don't think that's the reason at all. It's much more likely that the techie feeding the spell check like when it was first being created inadvertently omitted the word.

There are other oddities I've noticed. Like Yahoo provides us with blogs in our 360 but Yahoo spell check doesn't recognize the word blog.

How odd ... my British English spell-checker doesn't have a problem with it, so why does Yahoo's spell-checker?? Do they USE the word 'proven' in America or not??
