First off dont get a bird based on color or talking ability, get it based on personality and what you can reasonably afford, and fit best into your lifestyle

Now the only parakeet species that are more likely to talk are Asian parakeets, and South American parakeets

Alexandriane Parakeets are somewhat common in captivity, when hand fed make loving affectionate pets, thye are the largest of the parakeets at 20 inches some individuals more or less the tail is 2wice the length of their body, they are green with the males having a purple ring on their neck, they are generally quiet. and gentle with children. as far as speaking ability they can be talented, the most talented of the Asian parakeets. The4y can live up to 40 years/

Mustache Parakeets- Are hard to find but make superb pets, they are small 10 inches, half of which is tail. they are great for apartments because of their small size, they are sexually dimorphic, males have an orange beak females have a black beak, females are just as friendly as the males, I worked with one in a pet store nemed Fred and he was wonderful, and very freindly and curious andyone could hold him. I sold him to a nice family who wanted a family pet bird that was quiet. Mustache parakeets can learn a few words. They can live for up to 20 years.

Indian Ringneck Parakeets are common and when hand fed are just as wonderful as the alexandriane parakeet, they are closely related and have similar behavior

Canary Winged and Grey Cheeked Parakeets arent very common but are rapidly rising in popularity, the amount of them being bred in captivity has doubled since 2001, and its expected to rise even more, in the years ahead. theya re small 8-10 inch birds thta are very quiet some individuals are talented mimics others arent but are loving wonderful pets, they are great for families with hectic lifestyles or arent home much. They can live for about 15 years

Budgies are great but more often then not they dont learn to talk the Asian parakeets are more handleable and more likely to learn to mimic.

All the asian and south american parakeets need extra fruit in their diet such as cantaloupe, mago, grapes, as well as vegetables such as carrots, and green beans.

They love to be held and pet but dont scratch their neck they dont like that they way a macaw or cockatiel would.

The key to teaching a parakeet to talk is to have the parakeet think it's part of the "human flock", and therefore that it needs to communicate with its human friends. So step one is to have your young parakeet on its own, surrounded by humans that talk to it.
Birds learn best in the morning, when their mind is fresh and ready for new information. If you use a towel or cover over your bird's cage, talk to them for 1/2 hr before you remove it each morning. Repeat the same phrases loudly, slowly and clearly. Parakeets do best with hard letters like K and T, so the traditional "hello" is actually sort of hard for a Parakeet. "Cutie" would be much better! Parakeets tend to mumble and to talk quickly, so the more slowly you talk, the more normal it will sound when the bird starts to repeat it.

Yes parakeets can learn to talk. It might take a while because you have to work with them. You have to have time to teach them, and repeat the word about 30-40 times daily. Only try one word though at a time. Don't confuss it, it's like a baby. One thing at a time, be patient and teach it! Don't be aggresive. I own a 3 1/2 year old sun conure, she hasn't learned how to talk yet, and I don't think she has a very high vocabulary, but I am working with her. She is learning the word 'no' she is learning what that word means and when someone says it what to do. She is a very smart bird. They are great pets. I love mine, I'll have her 1 year in January and she is like our very own.

yes parakeets can talk but it may take a while. I bred my paprkeets and gave 1 of the babies to my great gandma. She named it after her husband(he died). She would talk to him everyday and Now he says: Good Moring Regina, Good Moring, Good Moring Freddie(his name), He sings happy birthday, calls buddy(the dog), and does so much more. But if you are looking for a talker then get an Alexzderan parrot. They are very rare but the are a type of parakeet just bigger. We have 1 and his name is winstion. We got him from a friend a few weeks ago. He is 6 or 7 and has a 50+ vocab when we got him. When he came to his new home he started meowing(getting the kitten),wistleing 3 times in a row to call the dogs(mimics my mom), says bobby my brothers name, and so much more. And on top of that he is goregues. **Email me if ou want to see him.**

Yes, parakeets can be taught to talk. You have to work at it, and start with one word, that you repeat about 40 times a day. After the bird learns the one word, it will learn others much faster. Don't put a mirror in the cage, though, or it will only want to chirp at itself. A friend once had a green parakeet who had a huge vocabulary. He said, good morning, good night, I love you, pizza, Herbie (his name); lots of words. He was fun.

yes they do, eg cockatiels, but if you want a talking bird for sure then you rather dont want a parakeet. a talented to be talking bird should be able to say something or imitate sounds in the pet store when you buy it - so check for this. Last week i did shopping in a petshop with amazons that were saying hallo, laughing out loud whistling and imitating human babies. they just picked it up somewhere as they grew up.

Most types of parakeets are capable of speech, I have even heard a hand reared love bird that talks. Teaching them is the difficult part. The capability to speak is not sex related and with time and effort you should be successful.

Budgies can copy sounds but don't sound exactly like voices and you really have to work with them. Get a cockatiel. They are great and they're not as expensive as a parrot. You could also get a Quaker parakeet , they will talk and they look like miniature parrots.
