Only one year went by from 1996 to 2006? My calendar must have lied. I am failling to follow this question, I am agreeing with the other responders, but since this is posted in the Medicine catagory, I would have to guess that you are looking for something else. With regards to that, I am not sure...the biggest advance in Medicine in the past ten years... I would have to jump on the band wagon of late and say that the HPV vaccines will probably prove to be the biggest advancement in the past ten years. These vaccines, if we actually start using them, have the potential to save thousands to millions of lives with minimal costs. Most of the other advancements, however, are expensive and can help only a few at a time.

Well I'd go with the natural disaster such as the Tsunami, but 9/11 (which includes Twin Towers and the other two planes) has to be it.
It sparked a major war which may evolve into the third great war. Alreay, several hundred thousand people have died (mostly civilians in Iraq), and many more are to come. Also, many more have been injured but not killed.
That, and the Red Sox winning the world series, which was equally improbable.
