There is nothing in the New Testament that they could use (or twist) to justify such action.

Occassionally, they do, but they believe that the "Holy War" in which they engage is a war for souls, not bodies; their enemies are not flesh and blood but are spirits and demons; their God is going to return and bring justice on the land, so they tarry for His vengance. It's not because Christianity is a religion of peace - Christianity is a religion of the sword, like all religions. But the use of the sword in the modern day is restricted to the state, not the church. In the past, God's people weilded the sword, and in the future, God Himself will.

That wouldn't be christ-like. Christ's kingsom isn't of this world and we don't battle against flesh and blood. True Christians battle personally against the things we believe are wrong and want everyone to be aware of better choices. Jesus, whose name means "YHWH Saves", is The Way to a better life. It's upposed to give us a better attitude of value towards life, which is also known as love. Love is the very essence of Christianity. Love can do great things such as changing the hearts of people. Unfortunately though, many "christians" are weakened by hypocrisy.

Do you mean this week? They certainly have throughout history. And not just "extremists," but main stream Christians.

Luther speaking on occasion of peasant unrest (and a massacre of them ensued).
"Come, dearly-beloved lords and nobles, strike them, transfix them, and cut their throats with might and main. Should you find death in so doing, you could not wish for one more divine, for you would fall in obedience to God and in defending your like against the hordes of Satan." Nice, huh?

And before that it was the crusades, the inquisition, witch burnings, and on, and on. So I guess your question should with "lately."

They used to. Secular law keeps them in check. We've whittled them down to size, and brought them (for the most part) into the 21st century. Modern day muslims are what the Christians used to be in the 14th century, though. We've got a lot of work to do on them.

Because Jesus didn't teach us to do that, nor was that His example.

Matthew 26:51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.

What about Islam?

Sura 8:12 I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve; therefore, strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

I USED TO BE A CHRISTIAN AND WHAT I CAN SAY ABOUT THIS IS THAT IF YOU READ THE OLD TESTAMENT YOU WOULD FIND A LOT OF REFERENCES ABOUT GOD TELLING HIS PEOPLE TO KILL IN HIS NAME, WHICH IN TURN LEADS ME TO SAY... ALL RELIGIONS ARE WRONG... RELIGIONS ARE ONLY A TOOL A HANDFUL OF POWERFUL PEOPLE INVENTED TO DOMINATE OTHERS... THAT'S MY TAKE ON THIS, I'M SICK OF THE IDEA THAT ALL HUMAN BEINGS SHOULD OBEY A SO-CALLED SUPERIOR BEING WITHOUT EVEN ANY REAL PROOF OF THEIR EXISTENCE... WHY DO ALL THESE PEOPLE NOT SHOW ANY PROOF AND INSTEAD LEAVE EVERYTHING TO FAITH OR DOGMA??? BECAUSE IT IS NOT TRUE AND "DOGMA" IS THE WAY THEY GET AWAY WITH IT...

Because very few of them are quite that devout. They ignore the OT because their own morals are higher than god's.

Because they're christian. "Thou shalt not murder" is more than a suggestion, it's a commandment.
