The good thing is that first graders will look and sound cute no matter what you do.

Try writing some simple words for a song that can be sung to a tune they already know - such as words that would work well with "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". Make the words meaningful to their class and teacher and your school.

You could take the letters in the word "teacher" or in their teacher's name, and make large cutouts of each letter and have various children say something that begins with each letter - such as T is for teaching us everyday, E is for energy to play, A is for art you do so well, C is for ..... etc.

Here are a couple of examples of songs. Good luck with it.

Since this an assembly for Teachers Day... I think it would be greatly appreciated by the teachers if they theymselves were the focus of the assembly...

Someone has already made a great suggestion about the large cardboard cutout letters of the word Teacher....

I would suggest that you could get each of the kids to make a small gift for a teacher at the school.... if there are many more kids than teachers 2 or 3 kids can help prepare eah gift...

The gift can be a card with a simple sentence about what is great about teachers....

Teachers care about the kids at our school
Our teacher shares
Teachers help kids learn
Simple messages that let the teachers know they are appreiated... ask the kids to come up with some more ideas of their own and I am sure they will have lots of ideas... you are sure to hear great ideas from suh clever little minds.

Get each kid or group of kids to step up the microphone and read the message together... then present the gift to a teacher...

From someone who has some experience coaching kids at this age, the most important things are:

1- do as much in groups as you can; don't spend too much time with just one or two kids while others stand around. The ones standing aroudn will get bored and chaos will ensue.

2- Keep things short - the attention span is about 7 minutes. You need to work on one thing for about 7 minutes and then move to the next thing for 7 minutes and then the next.

3- Don't be surprised when they forget what they did yesterday - keep patience and keep practicing - they will get it.

4- Tell them what you are going to do - do it - then review what you just did and then move on.

5- Don't know what to tell you to do but I bet the kids have some ideas of their own. Why not ask them. Not everyone enjoys singing.

6- Make it fun for them.

Good Luck.

For singing, I'm sure they have a music class that makes 'em sing, so ask the music teacher at the elementry school about that. As far as songs, they all know kid songs like Old McDonald Had a Farm, Bingo, The ABC's, etc. You can try those or get them to learn a song, but it would be easier to do something they all knew.

You can also get them to perform a skit/play and maybe even get them to make up the story/script for it. You just have to remember that they are a lot younger so don't worry about the quality of the skit or their singing.

I can't really think of anything else... talk to the person in charge of it and see what they think. Maybe they can help you!

A good shloka to start the assembly is:

Text

Guru Brahmaa Guru Vishnu
Guru Devo Maheswara
Guru Saaksaat Param Brahma
Tasmai Shri Guruve Namaha

Meaning

Guru Is Brahmaa (Who plants the qualities of goodness)
Guru Is Vishnu (Who nurtures and fosters the qualities of goodness)
Guru Is Maheswara (Who weeds out the bad quality)
Guru Is Supreme Brahman Itself
Prostration Unto That Guru

After the shloka, you may want to take a few minutes to have the children present flowers to some teachers. This can actually be stretched as long as you want.

Besides this, you can have 2-3 of them come up in turn and speak out some good quotes on the occasion. See

Best of luck, I hope you have a good day.

i'm somewhat a lot the same as you. My cd's are transforming into lost over the years so what i do have left is in mis-matched circumstances in a field. My DVD's inspite of the undeniable fact that are well prepared all in the right circumstances. And multiples bypass at the same time.. I.E. Toy tale a million and a pair of, Pirates a million, 2, and three all next to at least one yet another and so on.. it merely makes it more effective common to snatch.

I know a Great kids song that my teacher taught us in 1st grade that we all loved. It's called 'There's a Hole in My Bucket'. You can download an mp3 version free from morpheus.com and the words can be found at various websites including
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There's_a_hole_in_the_bucket
The boys sing a line then the girls sing. It's a back and forth duet. Trust me, they'll have fun doing it which makes it easier on you.

Can you arrange someone interesting to them to come into their class and tell some funny jokes, interesting stories..? What they basically need is someone to give them a warm welcome/welcome speech, by telling and showing them that they don't have to be afraid, and that they've come into a nice place, where many nice, interesting and funny things happen...

For some of them it will probably be the first time away from their parents and grandparents, so they definitely have to be told that they're safe.

Together with singing you can make them play some games, that's a great way of losing tension and making friends among themselves.
