I used to ask the question to my experienced elders: Is there no one in the world who isn't selfish? and they used to reply in a bold voice that "there's no one in the world like that".
Today this is what I feel: Once a man says anything like that he isn't saying the truth because if he would have been saying the truth he wouldn't have said it at all.
"O my dear! selfishness is on what the whole world is based" (Don't you realise!)....Please don't reply me with that answer as well.

of course everybody posseses a dose of selfishness in himself. how would one ever take care of oneself if not? people have to protect themselves at a certain point, they can't think about putting others first all the time, it'd be impossible in many situations.

In my honest opinion - YES, but for different reasons..

Especially in politics when people want to ban things or limit rights to certain things, it's a selfish attitude on what you think is only right for you witout thinking how it will affect other people.

Look at the "Do gooders" of society today - their belief that their Biblical views should be placed on everybody's way of life - how more selfish can you get?

People are forced into being selfish as well.... if we weren't, we would ALL be broke from giving money to every telemarketer that calls us during dinner....

It's impossible not to be selfish in 1 way... sometimes you have to be... but not when it affects others...

I don't think we have any choice but to be selfish since we all have selves.

Maybe the Borg aren't selfish.

Also, it seems like the hive insects like bees and ants aren't selfish. Well, except for the queen, of course.

And even if a group of beings does not have individual selves, they still exhibit a group behavior that is in the best interests of the group, so you could consider the entire group as a single "self" that has self-interest and thus is selfish. For example, if you disturb a bee hive, all the bees will come out and attack you.

I dont believe that all people are selfish. Many people do unselfish act of kindness every day. No person is either-or, looking at it at a black or white perspective is not fruitfull. History is full og people whom spend their life for a greater good. Like Albert Sweitser, Gandhi, Dalai Lama, mother theresa etc. Many ordinary people sacrifice alot to give to others without anything to gain from it. Kindness is a very strong quality of mankind and in many cases much stronger than any misundersstood "survival of the fittest" approach to life.

Selfishness - Your Question is anything but SIMPLE !!
There are very few people in this world who are not selfish..
But the positive point is that - there are such people...
Even you might have met such people but u have to recognise them - they are so lovely - so subtle - so good to others that they forget about themselves...
They just live for others - thats how they are
If you identify such a person, you'll be surprised to know them - they are often called fools by their dear ones who don't understand them and think that Everyone in this world SHOULD be selfish!! - You'll know many who think this way...
Try to be one of them - Its the Purpose of Our Life - Live for Others - You'll always have something to smile for...

it depends on how we live our lives if we let selfishness take over or we overtake it. Sometimes I feel alittle selfish if I want ten minutes to myself. but usually Iw ould give the shirt off of my back to someone in need. I enjoy doing volunteer work for the local food bank and helping with rescuing dogs in danger of being put down. I have many times not bought something I need because one or more of my children need something as well. I try hard to be the conqeror of selfishness instead of it getting me.

If humans were not selfish, the human race would not exist.

Survival is based on survival of the fittest. And anyone who was truly altruistic (no such person exists) would not survive.

Every person on the planet is selfish and does not do anything on a regular basis that does not please him, or, does not satisfy his personal needs.
