It is a long time joke that Dads always get ties for birthdays or other presents. Why not make a giant paper or cardboard tie? Maybe write on it amongst the other decorations, with some of his 'favorite' expressions. Make something personal for him.

I usually don't answer questions from people with only a smiley face and one question. However I will make an exception in your case. See if you can get ahold of old pictures of your dad from relatives. (They could pay for them to be copied even and send you the copy) Go to a dollar store and get a scrap book or album for $1.00 and put the pictures in with dates and information about the picture. I did this one year and my dad still says it was the best present he ever got. (If you explain to the relative what you are doing they probably will be happy to cooperate.

A card with maybe a poem in it that you've made up yourself. Something from the heart is better than any store bought gift ya know! If you have a picture of you two or maybe one of just you... you could redo an old frame and put the picture in it for him! Good luck...be creative!

you can put together a scape book of all the years you've spent with him. i'm in my 40's as well and around this time the family history and pictures of past are important. documents, pictures, birth certificates and those memories of grandparents, etc..... a pictures says a thousand words, put a little saying underneath them to. for example, if you have a picture of your dad holding you when you were a little girl, you could say underneath it, i've always felt safe in the arms of love or dad, you've been here for me since you could hold me in your arms........just words from your heart is all that is needed for any birthday to a parent......my twins are twelve HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR DAD....anything from my kids makes me happy, even just a big hand held hug.....

You could give him a voucher for you to do a job for him, like washing his car every week for a month or taking out the garbage, or whatever jobs he does around the house.
Maybe you could make him a special dinner or a cake.

You could write him a card, telling him what he means to you or you could just spend some time with him.
Presents don't need to be bought to be appreciated. Whatever you give him, as long as it's given with love, will be fine.
Good luck.

Give him a card with lots of handwritten personalized certificates:
One free lawn mowing for example. You know just chores around the house that you know he would appreciate. Or offer to clean out his car....vacuum, windows, uphostery etc. No cost to you at all and he will love the personalized thought.

you can do lots of things actually. like washing his car, serving him breakfast in bed, make a card out of recycled materials, polish his shoes, help clean his golf clubs, iron his shirts, send a voicemail on his cellphone to wish him happy birthday, collect pictures of you together and make a scrapbook, make a copy of his favourite songs so that he could listen to it while in the car. in fact, it's the thought that counts.good luck!

IF THERE IS A CAKE MIX IN THE HOUSE YOU COULD BAKE HIM A CAKE , AND MAKE HIM A HOMEMADE BIRTHDAY CARD TELLING HIM HOW MUCH YOU LOVE AND APPRECIATE HIM... REMEMBER IT'S SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT TO RECEIVE SOMETHING THAT CAME FROM THE HEART THEN SOMETHING SOMEBODY ELSE MADE THAT YOU HAD TO BUY !!! HAVE FUN AND TELL HIM HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!
