while i have driven my moms suburban while i had my permit, i would like a smaller car. Not only are bigger cars so much to handle, they just cost alot to fill up. I was wondering if there were any cars that are not huge( old police cars) and also safe ( not kias) that are good for teens.

Saturn makes the safest car, because they even put cross bars in the doors to help protect the people inside. You can go to any Saturn Dealership and see how safe they are. Honda's are not known so much for safety, but rather for how long they can run. Honda's and Toyota's can get several hundred thousand miles on one engine.

Any of the small Hondas, Toyotas (or the Mazda 3) are safe and fuel efficient. Bigger is not necessarily safer. Better-built is safer.

For the most part your trading economy for safety. A Honda civic in a side impact crash will not fair as well as your moms Suburban.

where a honda or toyota is a cheaper car, they are safe enough but for an even saffer more reliable car, something like a VW Jetta would be a great choice.

Most japanese cars are safest and have great quality. You might want to avoid American makers (GM, Ford, Chrysler), as my friend owns several and they have given him nothing but problems. I personally drive a Mazda Protege5 that's a nice drive. Hondas are probably your best for fuel mileage and reliability.

One of Toyota's all-wheel drive vehicles like the 2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport. They're very safe...great in snow, no chains needed, etc.

I strongly recommend a Honda Civic. It is the only car I have ever owned, and love it and it gets GREAT gas mileage, and aren't too expensive. They last forever too!
