coz its a dirty animal and Dr. E. Kazim. M.D. in his article "Medical aspects of forbidden foods in Islam" (July 1981 issue of Muslim Journal has described diseases carried or caused by the flesh of the swine. He writes:

The pig is a scavenger. It is an omnivorous animal. It eats everything. There are many disease carried from swine to man, particularly parasite infestations. Lately extensive research has been focused on senility-old age is characterized by hardening of inner lining of the blood vessels of the heart, brain etc. a process called atheroselerosis. When a clot forms, it results in coronary thrombosis or a heart attack, cerebral thrombosis or stroke.

Different dietary factors are responsible for atheroselerosis. Gross atheroma may be produced in rabbit by feeding it with cholesterol, but when you add lard (derived from hog fat) to the cholesterol, the incidence of atheroma is increased and thus you would produce coronary thrombosis, and myocardial infraction.

Besides, lard contains 2800 units of vitamin D per 100 grams and no vitamin A at all. Lately vitamin D has been held responsible for atheroma, by causing increased absorption of calcium in the blood vessels. In human beings, serum cholesterol is not dependent on the intake of cholesterol in the diet, but depends upon the proportion of animal fats in the diet, which elevate the beta-lipo protein level in the blood. Animal fats contain saturated fatty acids and these saturated fatty acids have been found to be as one of the causes of atheroma in man. Medium fat bacon contains 25% proteins and 55% fat."

According to medical research, the fat content in pork is more than any other meat (beef, mutton etc.) and it takes longer to digest. Dr. M Jaffer in an article in the Islamic Review (London) of January 1997 issue has listed 16 kinds of harmful germs, which have been discovered in pork in modern researches and the diseases, which could be caused by them. The number of patients suffering from tapeworm disease is the highest in the world among pork eating nations. Other diseases attributed to pigs are caused by tri-chinelia spirates and intestinal worms occupy first place among such nations too.

Dr. Glen Shepherd wrote the following on the dangers of eating pork in Washington Post (31 May 1952):

"One in six people in USA and Canada have germs in their muscles - trichinosis 8 from eating pork infected with trichina worms. Many people so infected have no symptoms. Most of those, who do have, recover slowly. Some die; some are reduced to permanent invalids. All were careless pork caters".

He continued "No one is immune from the disease and there is no cure. Neither antibiotics nor drugs or vaccines affect these tiny deadly worms. Preventing infection is the real answer."

After reading the statement of Dr. Shepherd, one can realize that there is no real guarantee of safety when eating pork that one would not be affected by trichina worm. That is why modern doctors advise three prohibitions during illness: no liquor, no pork and no smoking.

Muslims follow the divine law which is much higher than the medical advice. The Glorious Qur'an says, "So eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you, and thank the bounty of your Lord if it is Him you serve. He has forbidden for you only carrion and blood and swine-flesh and that which has been immolated in the name of any other than Allah; but he who is driven thereto, neither craving nor transgressing, Lo! then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful." (16:114-115)

The above is the order from the Creator of the universe and Supreme Law-Giver. All Muslims are under the obligation to obey it. This is a plain and straightforward answer to those, who usually ask why Muslims abstain from eating pork. Nevertheless, there is no sin, if a Muslims is forced by famine or starvation to eat pork in order to save his life.

Christian, Muslims and Jews share this belief:

"Forbidden to you for (food) are: dead meat, blood and the flesh of the swine and that which hath been invoked the name other than Allah." (Holy Qur'an 5:4)

and

"The pig also because it is a splitter of the hoof but there is no cud. It is unclean for you. None of their flesh must you eat and carcass you must not touch. " (Deuteronomy 14:8)

These warnings have everything to do with health. Pork in the heat of a desert turns quickly into something unhealthy; and if not cooked properly, can bring about intestinal distress and parasites.

Modern hygiene and meat preparation has eliminated this condition so that pork can be safely eaten by anyone. However, because many Muslims adhere rigidly to the Quran, they will refrain from eating pork (and other things) based on religious beliefs.

ash_m_79: Muslims don't bathe? How is this possible when they perform ablutions (pre-prayer washings) five times a day? They bathe, my friend, they bathe. I was in Egypt during the spring, which is like the summer in California. At time did I ever encounter anyone's B.O., they were CLEAN. . My fiance is Egyptian, and takes two showers a day, and in the summertime sometimes three showers a day. THEY BATHE.

First and foremost, Muslims are commanded in the Qur'an to abstain from certain foods, swine being one of them. Muslims obey God and that's that.

Pigs are scavengers, they will eat anything, even extreta. They wallow in it and eat it. They carry diseases and parasites, such as the trichina worm. Back when the Qur'an was formed, there was no refrigeration, which made this meat even worse. People run the risk of contracting diseases, such as trichinosis. God's command was actually a blessing to the Muslims, because He was protecting their health by preventing them from contracting porcine diseases. He also protected their dignity by not allowing them to eat such a filthy animal.

I'm not a Muslim, but am considering abstaining from pork from now on. Seems like a good idea.

The Koran and the Old Testiment of the Bible both stated that people should not eat meat from an animal having a split hoof.. The reason for that, as we now know is that pork (if not properly stored) can cause various health related risks like salmonella. With improvements in keeping meats frozen, etc. eating pork is safe if properly prepared. However, the old Testiment and Koran have not changed- nor will they ever I would imagine.

Its the cloven hoof thing. Actually, it made perfect sense, in biblical times, there wasn't much in the sanitizing department, and we all know eating rare pork can kill, so because people are basically stupid, it was just easier to tell us not to eat pork in the first place than to try to explain to us how to clean and cook it. Same goes for the shellfish, lots of people are alergic to shellfish, so banning it probably saved a lot of lives. I'm glad I'm gentile and not under those laws, cause I really love crab legs and shrimp.

God said not to and they do what God says in that anyway. Just a good health practice. If you ever were around them for a while you would see why God said not to eat them or to even touch them. Would you like to eat a carcass that had maggots all over it that stunk to high Heaven? The pig will and really enjoy it as he will eat one another if given the chance. I have seen them cannobalize others while they are still alive. Biting off one anothers tail is one thing you really have to watch when you raise them. They were made to clean up the messes not to eat.

Just wanted to be sure the right information was out there on the trichina worm mentioned in the article posted. I found this definition on the internet when I searched the term "trichina worm". Turns out the danger is in RAW or UNDERCOOKED pork.

http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/primer/techniques/fluorescence/gallery/trichina.html

The article is misleading that was posted here b/c it never mentions the pork has to be uncooked or undercooked to be dangerous. It's common sense anymore not to eat raw or undercooked meat. It's safe to eat pork that is cooked properly.

I didn't know that Muslims didn't eat pork. I learn something new everyday.

Because the Old testament laws forbade it. Speculation as to what cloven hoof animals were forbidden and kosher meat practices were adopted, come from Mosaic laws.. Laws written during the time of the exodus and transcribed in the book of Leviticus.

The speculation is at the time that the cleanliness of animals was related to the diseases that they could carry.. Mosaic law is civic law for the early jews, and this law migrated into the old testament. During a time when little was understood as to how and why diseases were spread they looked at commonalities and for scapegoats (pardon the pun)..

Muslims were tribal remnants ascribe to Abraham's and Sarah man slave, who bore Abraham's son's Ismael. Mohammed was a cult leader of a branch of judaism that divested from Judaism and adopted the law as a form of cultural / social control.

Pork for all intent and purpose is inexpensive form of protein in nations throughout the world. But pork if not preserved correctly or cooked thoroughly can transmitted parasitic organism (such as tricnosis) or can carry salmonella or e-coli.

Strict practices of meat processing in the west has made pork as healthy (if not healthier) heart wise in the west.

As stated in both the Holy Qu'ran & Bible the pig was made unclean when God cast the evil spirit into the herd of swine. Many christian still partake of pork, but in Islam it is haram (sinful) to do so.

Because for muslim eating pork(pig) is sin. So they don't eat it. and that would be good in some ways. Because pork eat its faeces so when people eat it without good cooking they can be ill.
