You want to have natural hair for it to lock, relaxed hair won't lock. Please don't listen to anyone on what not to wear for styling your hair. They are caucasion and even though their show is quite entertaining, it doesn't even begin to touch on the African American community and whats stylish in our area.......we have a totally different style. And it's no nastier than greasy, stringy hair when it's bleached as blonde as it can be and dried out and in need of a trim.......... No offense to anyone unless they fit this definate description, but people need to stop bein so judgemental about things they don't know anything about. I personally would not wear locks because they don't fit my personality but the people that I know that wear them, wear them well and they look great. They keep them well groomed and they actually go to the salon more than I do. You have to do a lot of maintenance on them to keep them looking fresh. I think people see the pics of people from Jamaica and assume that is the style we are going after but "American Locks" look neat and clean and it is a thing our culture accepts, if they are not closed minded people........

Yeah because straight hair would take a lot of work to lock up. Curlier hair would be easier. Plus wouldn't look right with two different textures.

I know some people who have started their dreds with micro-mini braids or twists. Talk to a natural hairstylist. Good luck!
