We are not to put God to the test. From that, why would you conclude anything about acting in an ungodly manner?

Read the sermon on the mount in the gospels. No better yet read the whole Gospels and the stuff written in red. This was Jesus Himself doing the talking and you should be able to get a better understanding of what He was doing. What people have done to that teaching is of consequence to them. When someone holds the whole responsible for the few, I am wondering about their vision on reality. The devil, satan is here to lie to steal and to kill. He is not against moving around in the so called Christian community. If the people operating in the church are not staying in Faith then they too are open to the deceiving influence of satan. If you personally have been deceived by someone posing as a child of God then there are two persons responsible in it. One is the spirit called satan, and the other is the person that did not have on the armor to know the difference between truth and lies. It is a tight rope walk if you have questions about your faith. If the devil sees one crack in the armor he will personally send a deceiving spirit to penetrate that being and cause all kinds of behavior including self-serving and evil greedy behavior. Praise God for His anointing.

No Christianity is not a free pass to evil greed. When you have self-serving behavior that is exactly what it is, serving self. You need to know who the Lord is and in whom you believe.

Following the ten commandments gives you freedom to do what you want to do as long as you follow the ten commandments.
The interpretation of tempting God is a little too broad sometimes. You have to remember that doctrine varies and Christ talked of good doctrine versus bad doctrine.

Dunno why people always invoke that "Don't put God to the test" nonsense -- Elijah had no problem calling upon God to prove he was better than the other local gods, and Joe Hovah was more than happy to perform on demand!

Not in theory, but sometimes, in practice, it can be.
