A friend just sent me a doc in an ODT format, supposely this was how Word saved it, but my copy of Word has NO IDEA how to read this. Any idea what this is?

.ODT is an OpenOffice text document. You have to use OpenOffice:
http://www.openoffice.org

Or you can tell your friend to save the file in Word format and send it again.

OpenOffice.org is a free download and good software. Their word processing package is called Writer. Also, they can export it to PDF format if you prefer.
