North Korea is only a regional threat. They have a huge standing army and could invade either South Korea or Japan if the US presence was not a factor. There are a lot of reasons that unification of the Koreas should be a goal for the world leadership, but the politics of the North and South will always be a blockade to this end. If the North would get off it's quest for power, and the South the quest for being right all of the time, they would both be better off economically, and one more powder keg in the world would be defused.

North Korea isn't really a military threat at this stage. The political situation in NK isn't exactly too stable. The NK military is large, yes, but in the end it would not be able to hold its own against a US or European force. The potential threat with NK is that they will be able to develop a long range missile that could hit the United States or her European allies, potentially with a missile armed with a nuclear warhead. Regardless of what anyone says, Kim Jong Ill (sp?) is a crazy man, and crazy men who might be able to hit us with nuclear missiles are always a danger. That's why it is SO important to monitor NK all the time, and work on the US Missile Defense system.

Absolutely.
My best friend used to work in the international office of the University, so he would hang out with international students a lot. The Japanese student would ask me quite frequently:
Would George W. defend Japan if N. Korea attacked?
N. Korea is spreading fear throughout the region and the world. They are a threat and need to be kept in check.

It would seem that NorKor is the major threat in the world, followed by Iran. DPRK military policy focuses on maintaining and sustaining a military force capable of conducting an offensive operation into the ROK to attain the national goal of reunifying the peninsula.
It is based on three fundamental and interconnected concepts shaped by the late Kim Il-song's vision of the future of the Korean Peninsula:
*Eventual reunification,
*DPRK regime and leadership survival and
*the application of military force to achieve these goals
The North Korean regime is regularly portrayed in the Western as the lunatics in charge of the asylum. The traditional US deterrence posture rested on the ability to launch a devastating counter-strike against any country that used weapons of mass destruction against America, its allies or deployed forces.
Such measures worked against the Soviet Union, whose leaders were rational and risk-averse, but some argue that they may not deter rogue states such as North Korea, whose leaders are indifferent to their people's welfare. Although North Korea's strategies and tactics can be (sometimes purposely) baffling, the country is being run by extremely intelligent and very rational people with a strongly developed sense of self-preservation.
The North Korean acquisition of weapons of mass destruction stems not from an indifference to deterrence, but rather a keenly developed understanding of the uses of deterrence.

Remember that we have never signed a Peace Treaty with he North Koreans. We are still at war with them. We only signed a Cease Fire Agreement in 1953.
I was stationed in S.Korea at Camp Stanton, D Trp, 4/7 Cav. We was the Air Cav Troop for the Squadron. In 76 the N.K's killed two Army Officers in Panmunjon and we almost renewed the war over it.
The N.K leader is very dangerous and I am convinced the only reason we are not at war is because of his advisors. They have been able to keep him under control so far.

Yes I believe he is. A person that doesn't care for human life and only cares about what he can gain in the world is a threat. He wants power and power only. If he can provoke the United States into doing something then he will make even more countries turn against the USA. That is the ultimate goal of countries like his in the world.

THey are a threat that keeps growing every day other nations around the globe has us distracted from them. THey have always wanted a united korea and some day intend on doing this. If they have to strioke first to cripple us to get the upper hand they will. He has no desire to care for his people just to expand the base of his power.

About the crazy things NKor can do, yes it can be a threat but the Int'l community is already keeping a close eye on it although it is no assurance of complete control over the situation. Be safe and be alert always.
