Apart from the Greeks... I am Greek and i've heard that it's one of the most known words... Well?

It means person of great wisdom. Say it to your grandfather in front of your grandmother.

PS Being hit, spit on and thrown out of the house in response to being called that is a sign of respect and gratitude. If he kicks you in the ribs that's an extra sign of happiness.

In greek, malakas is a slang word which means about the same as a jerk or show-off. There re also some worse words which have about the same meaning.

My Greek friends taught me "malakas" as "asshole." This was while driving in heavy traffic, so I heard them say it quite a bit and I believe the translation they gave me.

In most Filipino languages it means "strong,powerful". In Turkish a similar word means a baby buffalo. I think it's from there that the Greek swearword originated.
