In addition to several excellent considerations suggested above, I would like to add that it may be mineral content in your water supply. Iron is especially bad at staining teeth or some sediment (or something) sometimes stains the teeth of people who live especially close to a lake. I know it sounds weird, but when you see it on 12-15 people who live in houses near the same lake, you start to realize that it's a pattern. If your water is the source of your staining, you will need to have it analyzed and then have the appropriate filter installed.

Tell you what...I agree we can rule out coffee and "anything"...but we can't rule out medication that you may have taken..and that of course would include the "recreational kind"....Calculus can build up on and between teeth rapidly once it starts..Tell you what, if you don't have any get some ordinary Food Coloring, like you would use on Easter Eggs...Brush you teeth really good and then place five drops of RED food coloring in a tea spoon and then swish it around in your mouth as though it were a mouth wash.Do that for at least one minute...Then spit it out and rinse with clear water....Now look in a mirror...any organic material on or around your teeth will be RED and that will tell you the discoloration on you teeth is food or calculus (tartar)and you need to get your teeth professionally cleaned by a Hygienist and get some instructions on brushing techniques. Good luck and I wish you well.

Poor brushing technique and not flossing.
The stains at the gum line could well be your gums receding and you are looking at the dentine (The layer of tooth beneath the enamel). If this is the case it's irreversible don't brush fiercely or side to side, use a soft toothbrush.
Your dentist can advise you.

It sounds like tartar build up - where plaque reacts with minerals in food and water and forms a hard build up. Flossing, brushing and if it is really bad a visit to the dentist for a scrape and polish is the best solution. It is worth noting that as well as being unsightly tartar build up leads to gum disease.

Try the listerine pre-brush rinse and swish it between your teeth. Do floss and brush. They are probably from coffee or tea. Watch the sweets especially sweets in soda's. Brush after drinking or eating sweets. The carbs really stick to your teeth. Also avoid mountain dew. My dentist said you might as well be drinking battery acid as it destroys your teeth, and is rough on stomach and kidneys!

Chocolate also contain caffeine and they could cause our teeth to stain. You should floss regularly to clean those areas that brushing cant reach.
I suggest that you go visit your dentist and have a dental prophylaxis. This procedure will clean your teeth and the whole gumline.
Good luck!

Listerine Whitening Pre-Brush Rinse, Clean Mint is fabulous. Get your teeth professionally cleaned and start using this product every day. My teeth have never been so white (love coffee and diet coke). You can buy it at most drug stores/discount retailers. It comes in a white bottle.
