Our son is 16 months and we weren't sure if we were going to raise him Catholic (my husband's family are Italian Catholics). If we decide to go the Catholic route, is there an unspoken cut-off date after which it's sort of too late to have a christening?

It is never too late to baptize someone in the Catholic Chruch.

All are welcome from 100 minutes to 100 years of age.

With love in Christ.

No, it's not too late to have your son baptized Catholic. To those who say it's not right to not have a choice--children who are baptized Catholic do have a choice! They usually go to Catechism when they are in grade school--1st -3rd grade to learn why they were baptized as infants and what their role in the church is. Then they have their "First Communion" when that course is complete--if they chose to finish it. There is more schooling after that to continue their religious education and when the child is in high school they have a ceremony called "Confirmation" in which the child chooses to become a complete member of the Catholic Church. A child has the ability to stop attending these classes or to go to another church at any time--just as an adult does!

Absolutely no, you can become a catholic at any age. My wife is Methodist and I catholic and she raised the kids catholic because it was easier to be brought up catholic than to convert at a later age. Now if they can marry into any christian faith(each of her 3 siblings married catholic) and their will not be any hassles getting married in the church.

I would believe they do baptisms for anyone, especially children since they believe their are born in sin. You probably would cease to call it a Christening after they are old enough to make their own decision.
