The bible, contradictory? Never!

No the sword is the Word of God and it is sharper than a two edged sword. In turning the other cheek He is saying do not react to insanity because you are only going to perpetuate the cause of the devil. If you are playing ping pong and you don't hit the ball back the game is over. If you know God's Word then that is the only weapon you will ever need. Negotiate with His Truth and nothing can be said that will stand against that.

Yes, it is a contradiction. One of many contained in the bible; mostly because it is not being read in the original language and the history of the time period is not being studied.

The "sword" that Jesus is referring to is the strength of will to be god's servant and so bring punishment to wrongdoers. Jesus was not afraid to use violence: "With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?" (Matthew 26:51-53)

By 'turn the other cheek' Jesus is asking for tolerance among his followers. Something often forgotten in the attempts of some Christians to convert anyone who is not a Christian.

So, someone can both carry a sword and be tolerant. Or, believe in their faith while allowing others the freedom to do the same.

He did not say He came to give us the sword. He said He did not come to bring peace but a sword. My understanding is that His coming will make known who is the real believer and who is not, who are sincere and who are the hypocrites. This does not contradict His telling us to turn the other cheek. What actually happend is that the hypocrites keep on slapping the sincere, while the sincere keeps on turning the other cheek.

Ok, after reading some of these answers, it appears Jesus didn't say anything about giving us a sword (it would be very out of character for him). Jesus was a pacifist. Paul was a Roman 'inquisitor' (not exactly, but that gets the point across). Thus Paul, being a human, used his experience to color his speech (and letters). This means Paul would talk about swords and militant christianity, while Jesus was all about turning the other cheek and loving others as yourself.

look at the original sin what happened after God handed out the punishment to satan man and woman. what did he put in place to guard the way to paradise an angel with a sword. fast forward to Jesus dying for us. That is God waging war against evil for us. Jesus is the word of God. The battle is the Lord's He won. we can be saved if we accept his gift of salvation. The Bible also says we do not war against flesh and blood but against spirits and principalities in high places (another way of saying against satan and the other fallen angels who are called devil and demons now. and evil thoughts and false things they spread ) when Jesus told us to turn the other cheek he was telling us to turn the other cheek against other men. When we accept Jesus as our saviour we will immediately be thrown into a war that has been going on since satan tried to become like God. He will immediately try to get our family's to oppose us and try to get us back on his side by causing them to fight against our decision to come to Jesus. Hense the sword (the word of God who is Jesus) splits families apart. We should turn the other cheek and love them so that the love of Jesus can win their souls as well when they see our Love joy and peace that we have in Christ

I somewhat have in simple terms accomplished a e book "The Bible that dethrones Christ - and the Bible that would not". The argument relies on the thought that Jesus is Lord over each and every thing. the thought God instructions His creation to kill one yet another is what crammed the heads of primitive previous testomony adult men who did not know God in any respect till He got here and printed Himself to them. Even then, they rejected Him. God would not command every person to interrupt His commandments. that's a lie from the pit. A reality that Moses and Elijah have been probable discussing whilst Christ provided them to the disciples. A lie that the Romans compiled whilst they created the 'canon' called 'The word of God'. The Bible is an insult to Christ and you will possibly be unquestionably specific that as quickly as Christ comes, the 1st factor he will do is, sling this abomination onto the dung heap.

We defend with the Word. The sword is truth.

Turning the other cheek is rather, to ignore a minor assault (verbal or physical), assuming that it is not important enough to counter.
