Learned it in college. Had to have a foreign language, as I have some hearing loss, English is hard enough. So I cheated and went with a language that did not require hearing.
If you want to learn, there are many good books to teach the vocabulary. If you want to learn, get one, and then start signing when you are around home instead of speaking. Won't take long to learn if you use it.
I got good enough to work as an interpreter while in college, signing classes for deaf students. Still do some signing when needed for my church. (We are located less then a mile from a large school for the deaf). Plus my own hearing has reached the point where I often use it to communicate with my wife if I am across the room and TV or other load noises are present.
I also just completed to two week run appearing in the musical "Once Upon a Mattress" playing Sextimus the Silent, the mute king who only communicates by gestures and signs. Being able to sign gave me an advantage at the audition. They handed as a paragraph and had us "gesture" it for them.

I do know sign language and I learned from a book. I recommend a children's book to start off with since it is easier to understand, once you get a hold of the basics then you can move on to more advanced signing. Or, your local community college may offer classes.

I took a sign language class in high school, which some say is not the correct way, but it works.

Yes. I learned it many years ago from my neighbors who were deaf. Later, my niece was born deaf so everyone in the family learned ASL.
