The first wave of baby boomers just turned 60 and the younger members of that generation are all over 40. There haven't been significant wars to reduce the population at a young age, so they weren't reduced in numbers at a young age. And because of Roe v Wade, abortions rose since 1973 so the birth rate declined dramatically, making the older generation that much larger than the younger generation. Add in advances and access to medical care and you've got a good synopsis.

In the USA and other developed countries ...
People live longer, probably due to better diet and medical treatment. After WW2 people started practicing birth control and having fewer children. Instead of having babies when they are in their 20's, women now wait until they are in their 30's to have their first baby. More people opt not to have children than was the case 30 years ago.

Baby Boomers from the 50's. They were the babies from the guys going off to WWII. The population exploded back then. So, those babies are now 50+ years old.

The reason right now is the baby boom. All the kids from the baby boom are in their 60-70's now.

because people , are having kids alot older, and thefore the average age , is increasing
Also the number of younger generation peoples are losing there lives, due to suicide etc.
