What do other countries call their phones, cell? mobile? or something else. thanks

People just have thier own way of saying things i guess - the States call them 'cell phones' - which is the technical term for them:
''To implement a cell-phone system, a geographic area is broken into smaller areas, or cells, usually mapped as uniform hexagrams but in fact overlapping and irregularly shaped. Each cell is equipped with a low-powered radio transmitter and receiver that permit propagation of signals among cell-phone users.''
And the UK call them 'mobile phones' - which is'nt really technical at all - we are able to walk around with them, therefore they are 'mobile' phones.

Why? for the same reason it is an eraser in the US and a rubber in the UK, or a flashlight in the US and a torch in New Zealand, we speak different dialects of English.
And cell phones are called "Keitai" in Japan.

I beleive Bush named it a cell phone because it kills brains cells, here in Oz we take the *iss and call it a tumour..Well some do anyway..But usually a mobile.

mobile sounds kind of french = mobilé.
Well perhaps...um nope, i dont think so, but I prefer mobile phone rather than cellular (cell) phone. Whatever.

Mobile in Australia - it's portable, mobile so makes sense to me.

Why do they say "pants" in the US and "trousers" in the UK or "sneakers" in the US and "trainers" in the UK? Who knows. In Mexico they call them "celulares" because they usually copy American English terms.
