I take it you practice what you preach. I take it your actions, words, behaviour are a model not only for your children but for all those around you. That's great. Keep up the good work.

Well people no longer teach children anything. We wrangle and twist everything to fit we want and while we fight over it the children learn nothing. We refuse to teach our own children anything about life, sex, ethics and say the schools should do it but as soon as school tries someone sues since it doesn't match their personal belief and once again children are left with a void where their education is supposed to be.
People need to stop fighting over education, let the schools teach reading, writing+literature, math, science, history which are the basics and let the family fill in the religious and moral education.

I try to teach my children life lessons every day. I try to explain to them why what they are doing is wrong. We talk about being a good person, friend, doing what is right, etc. I am known around my house as the lecturer, and my husband tells me that they would rather be punished than listen to me talk forever, but I don't really feel like they are learning from that. They know that they have done something wrong but not WHY it was wrong. That is what I try to teach my children. And although I don't have perfect children, I have some wonderful ones who I see try to become good people and whom I love very much.
Excellent question to get people thinking and open some eyes. You sound like a wonderful and insightful mother.

I teach my son the Peaceful Solution.
It is a great character building set of books that have easy to follow instructions.
There are free lessons and activities on the web as well.
These are used in public schools and have no religion.
Excellent!!!! Respect, Asking, Self-Control,Ownership, and Do Not Steal
Who doesn't want their children to have these?

Actually, we don't teach our children anything. They have an build-in ability to learn. They learn all those things themselves, when they are ready.
The only thing we can teach to our children i.e. give them something they wouldn't learn otherwise, are the negative behavior models, the bad things.
You cannot teach children love, they grow to love naturally. Only thing you can teach is hate:
"Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. "

Of course people of faith teach their children values. Who wouldn't teach their children values, regardless of their faith (or lack thereof)?
I have issues with people who teach their children that love of God comes before love of your fellow human being (as I believe this mentality can lead to atrocities in religion's name), but I would never tell another person how to raise their child or what values they should instill. That's for parents to decide on their own.

You can teach your children all you want. Sometimes they dont want to learn.
I say this because i'm 16 years old and without trying my mom tout me to have my own mind and come to my own conclutions about the world around me. The couse it that we can't be any more diffrent from one another. Its a good thing too. We both bring diffrent things to the table and from diffrent perspectives. What you think your "teaching" you children i think it just a small foundation they'll use in the future to make up there own minds about things.

i think its very important to firstly teach the children how to be good people , have good morals and be non judgemental over others
i teach them to be spiritual rather than religious but answer any religious questions i can or find an answer for them if i don't know
i try to lead by example , i would never tell my children one thing then do something opposite
we can only do our best but I'm sure our best is good enough

I make sure that my children learn about all forms of spirituality and learn to respect them. I try to give them a good basis for tolerance and respect. I also want them to understand the reasons they believe what they will believe, whether they choose the religion I chose or something different.

I did as best as I could when my son was little and at home. I am still teaching him whenever I see him.
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he won't depart from it. Also teach them... in the morning, when you walk along the way when you rise up and go to bed.
