I have a video cd file avseq???.dat which is 800mb approx, how can I burn it to DVD? Excuse my ignorance as I'm new to the video aspects of PC's!

u can write it directly to dvd, all u need is a dvd writer and a dvd burning software, like nero!!
create dvd video, select the avseq file and burn thats it!!

avseq001.dat is not a DVD file, it's a video-cd file like the OP said (read the question properly!).
These files (800mb+) as AVI's will not fit on a 4.7 DVD and need dual-layer discs in order to be written back to DVD.
So it can't 'just be written to DVD using Nero'.

If you have .dat file from Video CD or Super Video CD, you can just rename it into .avi because it is really .avi file.
If you want to recode it in any other format, you need video converting software - there are a lot of such programs on the Web for free.
For creating a DVD Video disks I can suggest you a Nero Vision Express software.

Avseq.dat is a file used in DVD formats, so what more do you want?

try nero recode v6 or 7. Its very easy to use and give great results
