I want to know if it's wrong to follow what field of interest you really love to study. I mean having a depression is such a big destruction thus it even include destroying your dreams...I really want my psychiatrist to believe me despite this stupid illness..I know what I can do... do I have to give up? does it mean following her advice takes away your dreams of not being a psychiatrist at all?

I think understanding what people are going through will help you have empathy and be an even better psychiatrist.

Psychiatry is a highly subjective field. The person who knows you best is not your psychiatrist, it's you! Don't let your psychiatrist tell you that you can't achieve your dreams -- it is you who determines your destiny, not your psychiatrist.

If your psychiatrist is making you feel worse and not better than maybe it's time to fire them! It may be time to find a better psychiatrist or better yet, to find a good medical doctor who can see if there's actually an underlying physical cause of your depression. You may, for example, be deficient in Vitamin B12 and once you start taking B12 will feel much better.

And finally, if one day you are a psychiatrist yourself, you will be in a position of authority where you can encourage people rather than discourage them as your psychiatrist seems to be doing with you. The world needs more good psychiatrists!

It is never wrong to follow your dreams. Just because you suffered from depression does not mean you cannot be a psychiatrist, therapist, counselor, PhD, anything you want to pursue. You may want to consider changing psychiatrist if this person is not willing to give you some positive reinforcement and encouragement. Follow your dream.

If you think you can do it then DO. I know a lot of therapist that had to recover from their own problems. But you have to go through school to learn to be one. you can't just be it because you have learned from being in therapy. good luck.
