We were wondering if we decided to get married while on the ship, does the captain of the ship have the authority to perform the wedding ceremony and would the marriage be legal and binding once we got back to port?

It is not true that every ship's captain has the authority to legally marry. The link below will help you determine if a wedding at sea is going to be legal or not.

The Captain does have the authority, but you'd probably have to re-do it back in the States, as the Captain may not be registered as an Ordained Minister in the US. Ask the cruise line before hand to be sure. Also, if you want to get married on the ship... you HAVE to plan it in advance. Most ships don't do "whim" marriages anymore. They don't want people getting drunk and getting married, Vegas style. So make up your mind before you go so you can plan it with the Cruise people before you leave! :-) And have fun!! Cruises are soooo much fun!!!!

It's very tradtional for Captains to Marry couples while on his Ship It's allowed in Maritine law. I'm not specific on the legalities, Though I do beleive Maritine Law is recognized in the US thus this would be a valid Marriage. Most Comercial Cruise ships have a chappel and do this sort of thing often, even for the spontainious.

Depends where you are taking your cruise. I am not certain if the captain has the authority to perform a marriage ceremony. Why not contact the cruise line and find out if there is anyone who can perform this service.
