I very much agree. Most people are basically good. But to get suicide bombings or assasinations of abortion doctors requires the brain-washing of a religion.

You already know my feelings with regard to religion, but what the heck!! The quote is an insult to people’s intelligence!!
So 'Religion' now takes away a persons ability to use his/her own freewill/mind: and the ability to 'CHOOSE' what he or she does, or does not do?
To do ‘Good’, or to do ‘Evil’ is a matter of ones 'Choice': not ones religion... Unless of course you have some serious mental instability: or are totally stoned/drunk so therefore impaired!! If someone chooses to blow up this or that... it is a matter of 'Their' own personal choice to do it: or to follow the order to do it... In the name of their religion or their government!! They have the same ability as everyone else to say: ‘NO’!!
And it is not just ‘Religion’, that causes ‘Good People’ to do evil/bad/stupid/idiotic/out of character things either!! ‘Alcohol’ & ‘Drugs’ causes the same: and on a much wider scale… Along with desperation: stress: anxiety: depression… Pro Life Activists: Animal Rights Activists: CND Activists: but just to name 3: have all had there moments of EVIL… and not all are Religious/Christian based, or linked!!
The ability for Good or Evil is in ‘Everyone’ … not just those who follow a religion!! All it needs is for the right button to be pressed at the right/wrong time!!
Smile… Jesus still loves you Tom!!!

For good people to do evil things takes an act of the free will. To blame religion for good people doing evil is as naive as many of my fellow Christians that say things like, "The devil made me do it."
In other words, I DISAGREE with scapegoating, which should be too far below someone as learned as a physicist to waste his time with.

Good people do not do evil things, religion or no religion. I personally think Weinberg is an educated idiot. It is one thing to have knowledge...it is something else to have the wisdom to use that knowledge.

If it weren't religion, good people would find other ways to do evil.

It's partly true. Hypocrisy makes us to do incredible things. This is from Gandhi:
"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
