Everything installs and sets up okay, but when I go to the disk to load the game where you click on "war.exe" it became "war.exa" out of the blue and now when I try to load the game, the computer just says that it doesn't regonize the extension. What do I do to get this game working again?

I have tried it on an older Windows 98 computer and a new Windows XP computer and it is the same thing, it worked before, I don't know why it changed, It showed that the items on the disk are "read only" and I can't edit the name. AND THE ORIGINALS ARE SOMETIMES THE BEST!

try this, go to a dos prompt, and go to the directory that warcraft is in.
Then open up notepad and type this...
save the notepad file as warcraft.bat, on your desktop (this is a batch file).
Double click the batch file on your desktop.
Addendum: oh yeah, the way you go to a dos prompt is hit start, run and type or . the way you list directories is dir /p, and the way you change directories is cd blah blahblah. To back out of a directory type
The way you change drives is c: or d: or whatever drive you want to go to.
Read only: Right click on the file and go to properties. There you can set the read only status. You can do it from a dos prompt using the attrib command
2nd addendum: oh, you're running off a 3.5" floppy and it's set to read only? The little holes in the corner of the disk need to be covered, you can use scotch tape to do this. That will allow your computer to edit what's on the disk (although i would just copy the disk to your hard drive and edit it there). Msg me if you want more help but be specific.

It's possible that XP just doesn't like that game, so try an older OS.
What concerns me is the extension changing "by itself." Try scanning with antivirus, and antispyware programs.
Also look in your programs dierctory to see if any 'new' programs have arrived, especially if you are using peer-to-peer programs.
These are the programs I use, and unless otherwise mentioned, are free.
Ad-Aware, by Lavasoft; Free, upgradable for a price
Spybot, by Safer Networking
Microsoft Defender
Spyware Doctor, by PC Tools, $30 but updates everyday
AVG Free, by Grifsoft, Antivirus free, but upgradable.
