My 5 year old had her tonsils and adnoid removed Friday. Now she sounds as if she is talking through her nose. Some of her words are also a little hard to understand. Is this common with such procedures and is it permanent?

After any operation there will be swelling and inflammation as the body reacts to the injury of surgery.

Basically, blood rushes to the area and this can lead to swelling and discomfort.

The change in voice could either be a result of pain and discomfort that your child is experiencing, or it could be a mechanical problem where the swelling is simply getting in the way.

This should not be permanent, just part of the healing process, but contact your doctor if there is no improvement over the next couple of weeks.

I had that operation done when I was younger. Don't worry, it'll come back.
