I'm asian and when people of a different ethnicity talks to me they always say that they love Jackie Chan and Jet Li, I wonder why this is because i don't say that I love Michael Jackson everytime I see a white person.

Most likely, people are trying to find some kind of common ground on which to relate to you. It's misguided, of course, but because a person's first impression of another is visual (ethnicity, looks, etc.) and superficial, they take the first thing they see and try to find something of their own experience that seems like a good fit.

I've had a lot of experience with this, too. I lived for many years in the former Soviet Union, and when people found out that I was American they would often say, "I love Britney Spears" or "President Bush is a good man" - neither of which would normally induce me to carry on a conversation with the person. But it wasn't that the person wanted to talk about Britney Spears or the president... he or she just wanted to connect.

In a way, it's a compliment, although among the most tiring kind. The way that I dealt with it, and this might work for you, was that I would acknowledge what the spirit of what person said by saying something like, "yeah Britney Spears is very popular..." (or if it was a child, I'd fib and say that I liked her too), and then shifted the conversation to what local singers he or she liked, or I'd ask what made him/her like Britney... and by doing so get it off of the "You're American, you must like Britney" and more onto the person him/herself.

I think your Micheal Jackson comment is racist; just because someone is white that doesn't neccessarily mean they are a paedophile! LOL
