My macaw has a growth or tumor at the base of his tail. I think there is an oil gland there. I just noticed it and he’s headed to the vet tomorrow, but has anyone heard of something like this?

Hello again, well Oscar did have a blocked oil gland. My vet sent me to a specialist who was able to drain it. With antibiotics, and vitamins he should be ok. Thank you all very much for your support!

Yes, I have seen that on a Cockatoo. Let the Vet check it out. I am glad you are taking it to the Vet to have it looked at.

DO NOT take the advise of squeezing it!!!! Let the Vet determin what it is.

A parrot's preen gland looks like a nipple with a special down feather near the top. If it's blocked, the gland would swell somewhat and it's usually uncomfortable when checked. Blockages do happen often. It usually just takes a light massage to stimulate the gland and remove any hardened oil. Birds with a lack of vitamin A in their diet tend to have the most problems with this area and it can be corrected by feeding a diet with veggies, fruit, seed and pellets. In cockatiels, overweight birds can cause an over production of oil in this gland, causing an oily rump and resulting infections.

Like has been stated already, there are oil glands back there and it may just be plugged. I had that happen to a tiel years ago..the vet just drained it and it was just fine.

it may not be a tumor, his a n u s just may need to be squeezed, his glands may be full back there. it's normal. have your vet milk him, it's a nasty smelly job and they are used to it.

it could just be an infected oil gland or blocked.
