The substitutes that end in "ol" are what are called sugar alcohols and these can pull liquid into the bowel and cause diarrhea and other digestive upsets.

Some people are more sensitive than others, so the amount you can eat without symptoms varies from person to person. But if you eat a huge amount, pretty much everyone will have loose bowels.

Other types of sweeteners are less likely to cause diarrhes, unless you happen to be sensitive to them or eat tons. Even nature sugars can have this effect- molasses was an old-fashined constipation treatment.

Beware of even sugar-free products labelled "made with Splenda" if you have this problem because they are allowed to use xylitol and sorbitol in addition to the Splenda, a labelling loophole I wish the FDA would close.

Xylitol has one nice "side effect" as well, since it helps to prevent cavities.

Yes, Xylitol can cause diarrhea. Sugar substitutes do nothing but harm to a person's body, so I would reccomend sticking to regular sugar. If you are a calorie counter, just cut your sugar intake in half; it's a lot safer and healthier for you.

Yes any sugar sub can do this if you are sensitive to it, like sucrose and maltose. Just don't eat too much of it.

It can, if you're sensitive to it; abdominal pain, too. The same goes for sorbitol.
